While you are filling your planner full of plans for school lessons and activities, don’t forget to intentionally schedule down times too.  There will be days you and your children will just need to get out and enjoy the sun.  So, instead of bad weather days, try to include “Sun” days, “Fun” days. These days can lead to lots of fun and exploring. It gives your kids a chance to learn about some things outside that just may not be in a textbook. Hopefully these moments will refresh your homeschool when it starts to feel dull. Homeschooling isn’t only about academic education. Managing Homeschool and Working

After being a stay at home mom for sixteen years, I went back to work part time. Out of those sixteen years, I homeschooled our three children eight years.  I have had two of our students to graduate, and am now in my ninth year of homeschooling our youngest.

I have to admit, it is not always easy to homeschool and work, even though I only work part time. Realization has set in on days I have not spent time in God's Word first.  On those days, the path I travel is not as productive.  It leaves me very stressed and exhausted.  Without allowing God to order my steps before I jump ahead and start the day, I can usually expect a disastrous day.

1.   The first thing I do is grab a cup of coffee, and sit down to read a devotion or Bible study.

The first part of my morning is very quiet and still, so this is the best time for me to do this. If anything jumps out at me or really speaks to my heart I write it down. I do not want to forget what I have gotten out of God's word.  Later, I can look back and it may be exactly what I need for encouragement when I am having a rough day.

2.  After I have read my devotion and Bible, I spend time talking to the Lord.

I pray for my family's protection, health, spiritual growth, friends, community, and more.  I also ask God to show me what HIS agenda is for me that day.  I know by experience, if I choose to run after my own agenda, I will have a day filled with distractions.  By the end of that day, I will feel as though I did not accomplish anything.

3. The next thing I do is think about what must be done at work and the best way to get it completed as quickly as I can.

I am fortunate to have two part time jobs. When I have completed my work I can leave.  Also, I can take my daughter with me.  Sometimes we take schoolwork with us for her to do, but other times she chooses to help me at work. The tasks she helps me with at work can count towards home economics or life skills.

4.  I am usually out the door between 7:00-7:30 am.

My job can take anywhere from one hour to fours most of the time. When I have finished my job, I head home.

5. Once I am home, we leap into school.

We do most subjects everyday.  We have two workbooks that are only carried out a couple times a week.  We are usually finished with all school work by 2:00-3:00 pm, but we do not actually stay on a time schedule. We start a subject, when we complete the lesson we just move on to the next one until we are done for the day.

We still have plenty of time in the afternoon for extracurricular activities and chores. When we manage our time well, we can have a very productive day.  It leaves us both with a since of accomplishment.

This is what works for us on most days. Some days may take a bit longer. I do plan my agenda for each day, but I always write in pencil just incase I need to erase something due to God having a better plan for my day.  I am still learning  not to get stressed when something I had planned cannot happen, or when something I did not plan is added to the day. I remind myself God's plan is better.

I want to encourage you today to find the plan that works for you and your family. Do not be overwhelmed by trying to make a master plan. Make sure you pray and ask God to lead you in the right direction. It does take time to find the right plan and to pace yourself.

Sometimes we have the perfect plan so it seems, and life happens.  When it does we have to find a new game plan for that season of life.
