While you are filling your planner full of plans for school lessons and activities, don’t forget to intentionally schedule down times too.  There will be days you and your children will just need to get out and enjoy the sun.  So, instead of bad weather days, try to include “Sun” days, “Fun” days. These days can lead to lots of fun and exploring. It gives your kids a chance to learn about some things outside that just may not be in a textbook. Hopefully these moments will refresh your homeschool when it starts to feel dull. Homeschooling isn’t only about academic education. You Will Reap What You Sow

Recently, I felt the Lord leading me to teach a homeschool bible lesson on "You Reap What You Sow."

Not the usual lesson about "what goes around, comes around".

Not just how you treat other people or what you say about them, but more about what you sow into your heart.

What seeds are you sowing in your heart? Photo by Heather

We sow seeds into our hearts everyday. Some of those seeds may be godly and some may be worldly.

I decided to teach this with an object lesson.

The supplies I used:  garden beans seeds (you can use any kind of seed you choose), seed starter kit, water, bible to read the scripture verse Galatians 6:7 NKJV.

Supplies I used to teach this lesson.  I picked them up at the local TSC. Photo by Heather

I started out by asking my daughter questions.

I asked her, "What kind of seeds do we have?" As she opened the package. She answered correctly.

Then I asked, "If we want an apple tree to grow from these seeds, will an apple tree grow?"

Of course she said, "No."

I asked," Can I get tomatoes from these seeds? "

Again she said, "No."

I asked several silly questions like that.

As we began to follow the instructions on the starter kit, I continued to talk to her and ask questions.

As we talked, I turned the questions from what do we get when we sow seeds in a garden, to what we get when we sow seeds into our hearts.

I asked her, "If we listen to secular music all the time, what type of seeds are we planting in our hearts?"

She wasn't sure how to answer me at first. So, I continued by adding, "If we listen to music that gives praise to God, then we are planting Godly seeds in our hearts."

"When we always listen to secular music, although all of it is not bad, we are planting worldly seeds in our hearts."

As I said that, she began to understand where I was going with this lesson.

I moved on to the importance of how we should be careful about the type of movies we choose to watch, the things we look at on the internet, what we read, or even the friends we hang out with.

Then I asked her, "What kind of seeds should we be planting in our hearts?"

She answered, "Godly seeds."

I asked, " How do we plant these Godly seeds in our hearts?"

She responded, "Going to church, read our bibles, and pray."

Seems like an easy answer, especially after our little talk, but I wanted to go much deeper than this. I wanted her to understand that planting these Godly seeds was about everyday life, not just Sundays and Wednesday nights.

I want her to know what we sow into our hearts will determine our thought patterns, whether good or bad.

I want her to understand that whatever we sow into our heart will be what comes out through our mouth and through our actions.

I also want her to know, whatever she plants in her heart will govern the way she sees herself. It will effect her self-esteem.  It may cause her to compare herself to others, and that is not what God wants.

I want her to see she could plant worldly or Godly seeds into her heart just by the friends she chooses in her life.

If she chooses Godly friends, she will have a positive and Godly influence in her life. These kind of friends would help her to grow in her faith.

However, if she chooses to only hang out with friends who are not Christian and are very worldly, she will plant seeds of this world into her heart. These type of friends will not be a good influence, and can pull her right off the straight and narrow path and lead her to the broad path that leads away from God.

I want her to understand that our eyes are a window. We have to be careful of what we allow them to see.

So I continued.....

Withering Plants photo by Heather

"Somethings we listen to, watch, read, etc. can cause our spirit to wither inside. This comes from the worldly seeds we plant in our hearts, and the continued 'junk food' we feed our spirit.

Just as our physical bodies cannot thrive on junk food, neither can our spiritual bodies.  We need good nutrition for our physical bodies, as well as for our spiritual bodies.

But how do we get this spiritual nutrition?

First, we have to plant the correct seeds in our hearts. You know, the Godly seeds. Then, we need to continue to nourish those seeds, but how do we do that?

The seeds we planted today need good soil, water, and sunlight. How is this even similar to us?

Well, we need a good foundation in the Lord (soil), we need the living water that comes from the Lord (water), and we need the Son's light to lead our way and help us to grow in faith (sun).

In order to receive this nourishment, we have to work at it everyday, as if we are tending a tender garden.

We have to read God's word daily to continue building that foundation, kind of like fertilizing the soil.

We need to take time to give praise to the Lord for what he has done.

We need to spend time in prayer with our Lord.  Not just telling him everything we want him to do for us, but getting still and listening to what he has to say to us.

We need to seek him out daily and turn to him. Just like a plant turns toward the sun to receive the rays of the sun.

We need to choose music that gives God praise and also lifts our spirit.  We need to make sure the movies we watch, books we read, what we look at on the internet doesn't cause us to fall into temptation, deceive us, or pull us away from God.

When we do all of this, we can thrive through God's leading and nourishment."

Then I read the scripture to her and I prayed a short prayer with her.

Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever man sows, that he will also reap. Galatians 6:7 NKJV
